The New Phillip Blogger today

So hello everybody. It's hard to update a Blogger these days, life is so much more fun. I really would like to write more, but the truth is there's nothing going on worth mentioning to strangers.

The Beatnix

I've just become aware of this great parody song mixing the style of The Beatles with the song Stairway To Heaven. It's classic.

Another site bites the dust

Another site from Internets early days bites the dust today. GeoCities started in 1994 and acquired by Yahoo! in 1999 and ten years later it's now gone as of today.

In it's heyday: GeoCities - October 22, 1996
GeoCities - January 25, 1999

Alas, my mediocre site will not disappear, rater it will live on (for now) on FreeWebs.com

A survey from Miss. Hayley Hoover

1. What author do you own the most books by?
Good old J.K.

2. What book do you own the most copies of?

Saxon Math 7/6... (I'm not sure why but I got like 6 of them when my school got rid of the old edition, I guess I think that they may come in handy at some point in the future.)

3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?
Not a whole lot, because I do that all the time and get yelled at by my friends.
Example:

4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with?
HayleyGHoover... I mean Hermione.

5. What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)?
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, almost all the year I was in 3rd grade.

6. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, or The Chamber of Secrets

7. What is the worst book you've read in the past year?
Catch22, not bad as much as it was just plain painful to get through.

8. What is the best book you've read in the past year?
I haven't read as much as I'd have liked in the past year, probably An Abundance of Katherines.

9. If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be?
1984, I love it.

10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie?
An Abundance of Katherines or Stuff White People Like

11. What book would you least like to see made into a movie?
the rest of the Twilight series.

12. Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character.
A dream that I had when I was 13 or 14 in which I was riding on a boat with H.G. Wells, and that's ALL that happened.

13. What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult?
re-reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

14. What is the most difficult book you've ever read?
Catch22 for the aforementioned reasons.

15. What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen?
Unfortunately I have not seen any.

16. Do you prefer the French or the Russians?
The Russians, they have super neat hats.

17. Roth or Updike?
Have not read more than a small bit of either, but if I have to decide, probably Roth.

18. David Sedaris or Dave Eggers?
I haven't read anything by either yet, will some day.

19. Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer?
Chaucer

20. Austen or Eliot?
Eliot

21. What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading?
David Sedaris and Dave Eggers?

22. What is your favorite novel?
Brave New World

23. Play?
You're a good man Charlie Brown...

24. Poem?
I had a really good one for this, and I can't find the title of it anywhere, and don't feel the need to try to write what I can remember of it. Major FAIL

25. Essay?
I can't really think of one that stands out.

26. Work of nonfiction?
Up From Slavery
or
The Enlightenment in America (I had to read this for my History class last year)

27. Who is your favorite writer?
Rowling, Vonnegut, Orwell, and Bradbury in no particular order

28. Who is the most overrated writer alive today?
Well that's not really my place to judge is it?

29. What is your desert island book?
Where The Sidewalk Ends, or 1984

30. And... what are you reading right now?
20 Dog Years: Doing time at Amazon.com

Zenith Space Command

So, I have a new obsession. Namely The Space Command line of Zenith Televisions from the mid 1950s until the late 1970s. They're pretty sweet as they use a technology that Zenith developed, the Space Commander ultrasonic Remote Control. The remote technology which you can learn more about here (http://www.pushclicktouch.com/2007/03/28/zenith-space-command-the-first-20-years/) uses ultrasonic sound to control the TV. Here's a picture of one of the SC remotes that I have.

I currently do not have any Zenith Space Command TV sets, but I do have a Sears ultrasonic Remote TV set, and hope to get at least one Zenith SC TV set in the future. If you're interested in learning more about Zenith TVs of this period, I highly suggest checking out Doug's videos on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=drh4683.

Have a lovely day everybody.

So I bought an old TV!

Yeah, you read that right.

So, I was at my church's annual yard sale, and I happened upon this:

Yeah, it's an old TV, specifically a Sears Solid State Remote Television model 564-4035. I love it, it was made in December 1976 so as a remote TV made prior to the early 80s, it uses an Ultrasonic Remote. So, it didn't come with it's remote for the 5 dollars I spent on it, so now I need to find one for it. Fortunately I've been told that I can likely get any ultrasonic remote and probably be able to at least partially control the TV.

Also, click on the image and check out that styling, it really embraced the ideals of the remote by hiding all of the functions except the power button behind a door. Anyway, I like it and that's all I can worry about.

Stay classy internet (oh, and leave me a comment if you're one of the very few people who reads this.)

Great Article, hillarious paragraph

..."Other programmers are banking on a broader change in mind-set for the Obama era. MTV, which spent most of the Bush Administration blinging out with Cribs and My Super Sweet 16, is slotting more-idealistic shows, on the theory that young millennials want uplift now. But it's keeping The Hills, just in case."...

Go read the story over on Time's website.

The best websites of my childhood (that are still online)

So here it is, a collection of links to some of the best sites of my young years or until the web was forever changed by Blogger, WordPress, MySpace, YouTube, and Google (1998-2004)

My 5ish favorite sites ever created pre-internet video land:

1. http://www.Geocities.com Yahoo is closing down this once personal website giant later this year, much to my chagrin as I now must find a new place for my Junior-High website to grow old. (http://www.geocities.com/cooldude166861)

2. http://www.Xanga.com This site brought the world of Blogging and the world of social networking to my doorstep, it was my first step into the deep personality the web was about to take on as people abandoned their freewebs, Angelfire, GeoCities, and Lycos pages, and ventured into a world of socially-aware internet friendships. (http://www.xanga.com/bandguy817)

3. http://www.FreeArcade.com The explosion of excitement at my school introduced to me for the first time the intrigue and uniqueness of the experience of the Macromedia(look it up kids) flash based games the internet was now making possible. In fact, I still love going on on occasion to play Fill-It (http://ww12.freearcade.com/Fillit.jav/Fillit.html) (Oh there's another thing I miss about the older internet, the whole ww1, ww2, ww3, etc. thing that sites use to do to break up traffic.)

4. http://www.freevideocodes.com/ I got my first taste of the whole "Video on the internet" thing (What now? that's crazy talk.) in those pre-internet-video-explosion days from a little site you may recall called FreeVideoCodes. The first time that I saw this site it blew my mind, "You mean I can see videos on the internet?" These videos mostly if not exclusively used non flash-video techniques such as imbedded Quicktime, WindowsMedia, or a funny thing called "Real Media". (I actually link to an Eminem(I know) video on the first page of my aforementioned GeoCities page.)

5. http://video.yahoo.com/ "What now? A WHOLE site dedicated to [mostly music] videos, that's awesome" My first memory of using the infamous and under-appreciated Yahoo! videos came when my friend Anthony wanted to show me an awesome new video from Something Corporate entitled "If you C Jordan" (also possible my first experience with non-standard internet spelling) (The Classic: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/2990589/v2154737)

Sites that have passed on to the great internet beyond to never be seen again (except in old screen shots and on Archive.org) Click on the following to see the site as I did in my youth:

http://www.hampsterdance.com (in it's original form) (also included are BabyDance[I can't find a good example of this one], CowDance, and any others)

http://hometown.aol.com What can I say about Hometown, it was my first internet home, and I was sad to see it go.

http://www.postopia.com (I can't find a good example of this site in all of its glory, but it was an awesome site where you could jump honeycomb cerial off a ramp and into a glass of milk, and many other cerial-based games that may eventually come back to me.)

Anyway, I enjoyed this trip down memory lane, I hope you did as well, stay cool, and buy Binford Tools.

The end of the semester

So... It's the end of the semester, I can't say that I'm happy for summer, cause I'm working the whole time, but I'm glad that this semester is finally over cause it was annoying for several reasons, and the clean start next fall with be refreshing. I only have 1 final next week thankfully, so I'm done after Monday... I'll probably make another one of my standard crazy Vlogs... so yeah.

Keep it rocking

People are odd/douchebags

So I was just minding my own business and up on Twirl pops a tweet from @mileycirus like this

being a big fan of all things yummy I clicked on it, to discover this picture.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love pizza, and it does look quite delicious, but I really wonder what kind of people twitter has created when a picture of Miley eating a piece of Pizza can get over 30,000 views in about 30 minutes.

Also, why are people(I'm ashamed to say probably all pathetic guys) such douche bags?

Anyway, that is all. Cheers!

A new post

So Twitter is getting really ridiculously huge, FaceBook's gone mad, Seesmic's going to kill Twirl, YouTube's pissing people off, and I think I'm going to go back to watching MPEG videos on people's personal websites, making a site about my interests on Angelfire, and using Friendster (http://profiles.friendster.com/46706126) to connect with my friends.

Hey, it's Best Buy Co. Store #5, or as I like to Call it, Best Buy's equivalent to this picture from Wal-Mart.
